PhD Position in Organic synthesis and Biocatalysis, 30h/week
Research Topic: Harnessing enzymes for new-to-nature transformations
About us: Biocatalysis, serving as the biological counterpart to organo- and metal catalysis, stands as an integral component within the chemists’ arsenal, facilitating the synthesis of both refined and large-scale chemical compounds. Our focal point lies in the adept exploration, amplification, and refinement of this extensive chemists’ toolbox, fostering its application in sustainable synthetic practices. In doing so, we aim to contribute to the advancement of environmentally conscious and resource-efficient synthetic methodologies.
Project Description: We aim to explore new-to-nature reactivity through the synthesis of novel biocatalysts and the development of modern methodologies in aqueous media. Modeling and simulation (bioinformatics) but also characterization of new proteins are also included as part of the project. The candidate will be expected to synthesize simple organic molecules that may act as cofactors for the development of novel biocatalysts with new-to-Nature functions. Then the candidate will employ them as catalysts for processes with high synthetic and/or industrial interest. Characterisation of these proteins is also pursued along with the employment of bioinformatic tools for prediction and understanding of the reactivity.
For the available position, considerable interest and existing in-depth knowledge in one or more of the following areas are essential to complement our team:
Your Tasks:

- • Participation in scientific events
- • Assistance/Collaboration in organizational and administrative tasks
Your profile:
- • Completion of a master or diploma curriculum in one of these fields: Synthetic/Organic chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry.
- • Skillful and responsible in experimental work Experience in the following scientific fields: Biocatalysis, Bioinformatics and Biochemistry (not required).
- • Very good skills in German and English communication and writing.
- • Interest in research in the field as well as supervision and work with students.
- • Very good communicative skills and team competences and innovative ability.
