1. working definition “platform chemical” as basis for the following research
2. literature research to identify the platform chemicals (starting with relevant monographs and review articles, then primary literature according to keywords on the internet)
3. from the literature should be collected for each substance:
a. Name and CAS-Number
b. Brief outline of the manufacturing process and raw materials used.
c. Justification of its suitability as a green platform chemical (on the part of the study authors, the graduate student’s own evaluation is not provided).
d. (Possible) uses of the substance
e. If indicated in the literature, the substitution potential of the substance (which chemicals currently in use or for which applications the substance could be used as an alternative).
4. analysis of the selected chemicals according to their chemical policy status: here it should be determined above all whether the substance is currently in the European risk assessment and, if so, what the status (priority, “concern” according to ECHA assessment, current treatment according to PACT, registration with ECHA, tonnages, existing restrictions) is for the substance. REACH registration exists and if so, which tonnages have been registered). In this step the expertise of the Federal Environment Agency is available to the diploma student.
5. the results are documented in the form of “substance profiles” and in tabular form (EXCEL).
6. as far as ideas for an expedient and factually justified restriction of the identified platform chemicals result from the work, these suggestions should be presented and the consequence should be discussed (e.g. in the form of an indication of those substances that remain for further consideration when certain proposed elimination criteria are applied.
